How To Tell If You’re Depressed.

What is Depression? A mental health illness marked by constant sadness and the loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Symptoms of depression range from mild to severe. Depression negatively impacts how we feel, think, and act, disrupting day-to-day ability and function. 

What are the DSM-5 criteria for Depression? To be diagnosed with depression, you must meet five of the nine cluster symptoms listed below for two or more weeks. Generally, symptoms are present for most of the day AND are not fleeting or temporary in nature. Symptoms caused by medical conditions should be ruled out.

  • Depressed mood. Sadness. Emptiness. Hopelessness. 
  • Appetite change. Weight loss or gain. 
  • Suicidal. Intent to injuring oneself with the intent to die.
  • Cynicism. Lack of faith or hope.
  • Inefficacy. Lost of interest in things that once brought joy and/or happiness. 
  • Exhaustion. Restless. Fatigued. 
  • Low energy. Tired.
  • Worthlessness. Feelings of insignificance OR guilt. 
  • Sleep change. Insomnia or hypersomnia (excess sleeping).

How to Treat Depression ? Depression is treated with medication and/or mental health counseling.
